Learn why you should verify your business on Google and how to do it.
Why you should verify your business on Google

Claiming and verifying your business on Google can benefit your business in a number of ways. First off, verifying your business on Google helps it appear correctly across Google Search. Secondly, it also ensures that your business appears correctly on Google Maps, where your prospects and customers can find you and leave you a stunning review.

So where do you start?

Claiming or creating a business profile

First off, you'll need to find out whether your business has an existing Business Profile on Google or not.

Navigate to google.com/business and type your company name. If the Profile exists, it will appear on the right side of the screen, in the Google Knowledge Panel. Click on "Own this Business", then on "Manage the business" to proceed to the verification process.

If you don't have an existing Business Profile, you'll need to create one. Navigate to google.com/business and sign in using your existing Google credentials (or create a Google account first).

Verifying the business

Google offers several verification methods depending on what information it already possesses about you and your business.

Postcard verification

Google will mail you a postcard with a verification code. The postcard should arrive in two weeks, at which point you'll be able to enter the code to confirm that your company is located at the registered address.

Phone or SMS verification

Google will send a verification code via phone call, or SMS. Your business phone number therefore needs to be able to receive calls and SMS for you to utilise this verification method.

Email verification

Simply have the verification code emailed to your business address.

Video recording verification

This verification method will require you to record a video which must include a few pieces of information and footage.

You'll need to show your business location's on Google Maps, or capture a video showing the outside of your business' physical location. You'll need to include some footage representative of your operations (your stock, equipment, marketing materials), and finally some footage of something that confirms you're authorised to represent the company (such as a cash register, or non sensitive business papers).

Instant verification

If you've previously verified your website with Google Search Console, Google might allow you to instantly verify your business, without the need of additional verification codes.
